Anime North 2000
This was originally written on June 19st, 2000, right after the con ended (well, right after the three hour drive home from Toronto). It was posted to alt.fan.sailor-moon (a USENET newsground and my second home), so some of the stuff is only relevant to people who post there. ::waves to afsmers::
With the influx of posts lately, this will probably get lost in the
crowd, but oh well. ^_- It's Andrea's Anime North Report, so everyone
will read, right? :P
It all started on Friday. My (then) boyfriend Sunil came over at about 12 pm,
as Scott and the Ottawa gang were coming at around 1:00. They actually
showed up at 12:30, but that was okay, 'cause we got an early start.
^_^ James didn't come in a dress. I was very disappointed (actually,
we were teasing him all weekend, poor boy! ^_~).
We got to the Hotel around quarter after four. Lauren Michelle was
there to greet us along with Rob Fraiser. ^_^ We had a little trouble
checking in and registering for the con (-_-;;;; mou...dealer's room
ikitai yo...). But it all worked out, and pretty soon we were in the
huge line up for the dealer's room (full list of what I bought later).
Um...let's see...on Friday, I went to the Sailormoon State of the Union
panel. We talked a lot about the new dubbed eps... (>_<). Then I went
to the Masquerade vs. Cosplay panel, which was mostly interesting. Then
I went to dinner with Sunil to Pizza Pizza. ^^; After that were the
fanfic contest awards. I couldn't stay for the whole thing, but I got
to hear Scott and Greg read (I got pictures, too!).
It was then time for the music videos. I dunno, I found a lot of them
boring, but two really stood out! And both were by the same person.
AFSM's own Tim Park (okay, he doesn't post much, but he's been lurking
here for over three years) made a *hilarious* one in which Kenny of
South Park was getting killed to an EVA Death and Rebirth commercial
(er, the one to the tune of "Drink Milk Love Life" ^^;;; Gomen, I'm
don't know much about classical music). It was entitled Kenny: Death
and More Death. ^o^ His other video was to Weird Al's rendition of "One
Week" by the Bearnaked Ladies. "Too Much Jerry Springer" or something
like that to Sailormoon clips. Hee hee! It got the Judge's "Special
Something" award. ^_^ After that, I was tired, so I went to bed.
-_-zzzzzz
Saturday! I won one of the Anime Name That Tune games! Yay!!!
Unfortunately, they didn't have a final for it. ;_; You Don't Know
Anime was fun, but one of the questions was just plain wrong. They
didn't think Haruka looked anything like Kakeru. O_o;;; Then it was off
to the infamous Panel That Would Not Die!!! It was so much fun, like
always. In fact, it was so much fun, that I didn't even realise the
entire hour had gone by. ^^ But we continued the panel in Ken
Wolfe-san's hotel room. Yay! More fun!!! ^_^ ^_^ ^_^
Ooh, I have to do an aside now. Guess who was there!! Tim Nolan!! How
exciting is *that*!? He has *the best* Sailormoon fanfiction. I was
too afraid to talk to him, though. At least I didn't run away from him,
like I did with Greenbeans last year. ^_-
Ooh, and John Carp was there, too! Subarashii desu wa!! ^_^
Anyhoo, back on track. I had to go to the masquerade green room for
6:30. I had worn my costume all day. ^^ There were so many CCS
characters! At least four Sakura, a Tomoyo, and two Syaoran. ^_^v Now,
I was just wearing the natsufuku, but three Sakura were wearing battle
costumes. They were *so* good! Especially the girl with the dress from
the first OP (pink and frilly). There were a lot of other good
costumes, too. There was a *very* *very* well done Galaxia. She's like
an expert cosplayer or something. ^^;;; She danced and sang
(lip-synched?) to "Galaxia Gorgeous" from Seremyu. It was really well
done.
I didn't see all the masquerade, though. I had to go to the "Anime's
Gay Old Time" panel. It was pretty good. ^_^ *Lots* of people! They
showed Kaze to ki no uta beforehand and Zetsuai afterwards.
At this point, I hadn't really eaten since breakfast, so I was hungry.
^^ Chris Schack, my friend Craig, Sunil, and I went to Harvey's for a
quick bite. Then it was time for the J-pop dance party! Waaa~~~ii!! I
had so much fun at the dance party. It was awesome. ^_^
Sunday! Eek! I saw some dubbed Gundamwing (uncut promo video from
Bandai). I don't remember what episode numbers, but they were they ones
when Heero stole parts from Duo's Gundam and Trowa and Quatre make music
together (hee hee hee! Pun!). Even though I'm not crazy about GW
(except for the fact that I'm obsessed with GW fanfics), I'm glad I had
recently seen these eps subbed.
Tenshi ni narumon! is insane. That's all I have to say about that.
I went to one more panel, then saw some contest finals (I thought the
video game one would never end...). Unfortunately, the closing
ceremonies came next. It was all really quite sad. ;_;
BTW, does anyone know what the premiere was? I didn't stay long enough
to see...
Again, probably the best part about the con was meeting people! ^_^
Let's see if I can list all the afsmer's I met (in no specific order, I
swear!)...Scott D., James, Tim, Alex, Greg, Lauren Michelle, Rob (he
mostly lurks, I think), gbeans, Ysabet (she called me famous O.o;;;;;),
Chris, Dave, and probably some other people I'm forgetting. ^^;;;;
Gomen, it's just it's 1:16 am, and my brain is a little fried. *_*
Hee, I met real life yaoi fans! Wa~~i!! ^_^ I actually met Miko no da
and Chichiri no da (they have several yaoi fanfic pages). Funny story
here. I had actually met them both over a year ago at Queen's
University's anime club, but didn't connect them as the same people. It
wasn't until later on that I was like, "ohhhh! God, how could I have
been so stupid?" :P
I was also sharing a hotel room with yaoi fans. We didn't know each
other before, though, so we didn't find this out until later. ^^ We had
the best conversation in the van and at the restaurant on the way back
to Kingston/Ottawa. They're gonna tell me where I can find some
TasukixKouji fics. Hee. :D I think we scared James, though. >_>
I have found a mission in life. Well, two, actually. Never do I want
to see the Cardcaptors dub, nor do I want to see the SMS dub. Too many
horror stories (at the con alone). It won't be too hard, though.
Canadians don't get CN or the WB, so no worries. Also, when I go back
to school in September, I can't get cable in res, so no Teletoon or
YTV. Aw, that's a shame. I think I'm tearing up. Oh, no, wait. It's
just an eyelash. :P
Okay, stuff I bought!:
CCS Cheerio! anime artbook
CCS Cheerio! 2 anime artbook
CCS Sakura Card series manga artbook (TouyaxYukito!!!!!!)
CCS OST 4
CLAMP Campus Detectives VHS box set (^_^)
Catbus plushie! Wai wai! Tonari no Totoro no NEKOBASU! ^_^v
Sakamoto Maaya Dive CD (Maaya-sama!)
Hayashibara Megumi Bertamu CD
Pierrot CD (guys who did Haruka... KKJ ED)
Geez, is that it? You'd think I'd have more to show for blowing $500.
^^;;;
Um, that's about all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure I'm
forgetting lots of stuff, though. I'll just add it later when my brain
isn't completely gone. -_-;;
