Anime North 1998
This was originally written on August 8th, 1998, right after the con ended (well, right after the three hour drive home from Toronto). It was posted to alt.fan.sailor-moon (a USENET newsground and my second home), so some of the stuff is only relevant to people who post there. ::waves to afsmers::
I'm still reeling from a very exciting two days. ^_^ This will be long,
but I wanted to share this with all of you. ^_^
I went down to Toronto with a bunch of guys from Ottawa. They were nice
enough to pick me up in Kingston (though they did get lost ^^;;). On
the trip were Scott Delahunt, PowerTux (hi, James!), Tim Park, Curtis
Ireland (he doesn't post here, but some of you may recognize the name),
and a bunch of other people I had never met in my life. ::thinks:: I
think that's all the people from afsm. ^_^;
Saturday was pretty good. ^_^ My new friend and roommate Margaret and I
went to the dealer room first thing (well, after the opening
ceremonies). I spent more money in the first hour than I have on anime
all year!! I was, um, possessed or something. Let's see, I picked up
Eva 0:13 (subbed, of course), three Eva CDs, eight Sailormoon Nakayosi
Media Books (anime manga), four Wedding Peach manga (ureshii!!!), the
Marmalade Boy artbook (is *anything* cooler than that?), Evangelion
manga vol. 2 (Japanese), and one of those highly overpriced Mixx SM
manga (it was act 8 and had a pink cover, I think they were at Comic Con
last weekend).
Later on I went down to Chinatown with some friends. I ended up getting
three Wedding Peach wands (they are *too* cool!), Koishite Jet Memo from
Marmalade Boy (okay, this *might* be cooler than the artbook), and
tankoubon 8 of the MB manga!! ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ That's the last
tankoubon!
*Then*, when we got back, I went back to the dealer room and bought more
stuff!! I got tankoubon 3-7 of the MB manga (totemo ureshii!). ::cries::
I wish they had tankoubon 1 and 2. :( Margaret was just as crazy buying
every FY manga in sight. ^_^; On Sunday I bought Eva 0:12 (subbed). I
didn't have enough money for 0:11! Aarrgghh!!
Needless to say, my bank account went from about $450 to $0. And then
there's the money my mom gave me for food that I didn't spend on
food... I might have been hungry, but it was worth it for MB manga!
Okay, enough about me. ^_^;; The con set up was pretty good, although
it was annoying to keep switching elevators... I enjoyed most of the
panels I went to. The Disney/Miyazaki one was neat. Ooh! I met VKLL!
He was a panellist at the fansub panel! James and I were sitting in the
front row. ^_^ The Sailormoon fanfic panel was...interesting. ^_^; The
panel that wouldn't die II. ^_- Helen was really informative. Boy, she
does know a lot about SM fanfiction. ^_^; Pandora Waldron was a
panellist, and gave lots of good tips. ^_^
Besides Scott, Tim, James, Pandora, and Helen I also met Nightman, Joan,
Brad, and Chris from afsm! (did I leave anyone out?) There were two
guys in OW!R that James knew, but I had no idea who they were. ^_^;; It
really is neat to meet online friends in real life. Weird, but neat at
the same time. ^_^;
Let's see...what anime did I watch when I was there... I saw the
Slayers Movie (Slayers annoys me, and I saw it subbed before anyway),
and some KOR. Oh, I saw some Rurouni Kenshin (?). People's heads were
in the way of the subs, but it looked neat. ^_^; I saw a little bit of
FY OVA 2, which I haven't seen before. I wanted to see Hana Yori Dango,
but I didn't get a chance! Argh! :(
My friend Caitlin won the masquerade (best overall). ^_^ She dressed up
as Nakoruru from Samurai Showdown something or other (a video game that
I have never heard of before in my life). ^_^;; She spent *months*
sewing her costume and practising her routine. Believe me, I had to
watch her practice. :P I was really happy for her. They other costumes
were cool, too. Oh, there was a Sailorneptune. She sung her part from
Uranus&Neptune's song from the Super musical (I couldn't help joining in
at the end, though I did get weird looks from my friend sitting beside
me). ^_^;;
Let's see, is there anything else I'm leaving out? I barely got any
sleep at all. Let's just say I had a *really* hard time getting up at
6:30am this morning. >_<
Did any other people from afsm go that I didn't meet?
All in all it was a *fantastic* two days! I can hardly wait till next
year! ::Andrea attempts to read her MB manga::
~~Andrea Doolan
happy, happy, happy. :)
