I won't pretend to know anything about the series Shin Kidousenki Gundamwing, because I don't. I've seen a total of 2 episodes, and that was several years ago, long before my current GW obsession. I do like the music, though! "Just Communication" is a wonderful song (I listen to it at least once a day), and I have the Operation 4 CD (gyaa, Relena-the-evil-one is on the cover!)
Personally, I could care less about space battles, mecha, plots to overtake the government... I'm a shoujo fan. I go for flower petals and pink dresses. No, the reason I'm so completely GW obsessed is its yaoi nature.
Gundamwing has a *huge* yaoi following. Possibly the largest yaoi following of any series. You can't do a search on Yahoo without turning up yaoi sites. It's become so prevalent that certain sites have taken to saying "warning! this site has absolutely no yaoi content!" It's pretty hilarious.
The fact that there isn't any yaoi in the actual show doesn't dissuade us yaoi fans. Some fans do think there are hints (especially between Quatre and Trowa), but most of us don't care. There are five gorgeous bishounen boys in this series. That alone practically screams "please, put us in bed together!" ^_~
And the producers of the show aren't exactly doing a lot to stop the yaoi fans. In fact, they're encouraging us. Have you seen some of the official art? Some of it you could swear came out of a doujinshi, but it's actually official. The producers *want* the yaoi fans. It's like they're saying, "we're not going to put anything explicit in the series, but here are a few pics to appease the yaoi fangirls."
Since there are five main characters, and several bishounen supporting characters, there have been all sorts of couple combinations. Personally, I'm a *huge* 2x1/1x2 and 3x4/4x3 fan. I hate any other combinations of these characters. I mean, ewww...3x5(??!!)...4x2...1x3...2x5? I respect the opinion of the people who write those types of fanfics, but I don't read them. What can I say, I'm a monogamy fan. Duo and Heero just seem so *right* together. Putting them with anyone else seems wrong. The same goes for Quatre and Trowa (who could split such a sweet couple up?).
Now, Wufei... As a whole, I don't really care for him (sorry Wufei fans ^^). I sort of stay away from fanfics staring him, and if he's in a fanfic as a supporting character, I don't really care who he's paired with, as long as it's not the other pilots. ^^ Popular opinion seems to be 5x13/13x5 or 5x6/6x5 or even 5x13x6 O_o (generally, I don't go for threesomes). Sometimes he's also paired with Sally Po or Meiran. Unlike the other pilots, I really don't care if he's in a non-yaoi pairing. Actually, I will admit to liking the WufeixSally pairing. They realy are fabulous together, mostly because they play off each other so well. I wouldn't go reading a lemon, though. o.o
However, I absolutely hate non-yaoi pairings for the other pilots. It's even worse than bad yaoi combinations. Yes, I hate Relena. I *really* wish Heero would just bump her off. ^_- The only time I tolerate her is if she's sympathetic to the DuoxHeero pairing. I'm not too fond of Hilde either. Of course yuri Relena and Hilde are absolutely fine. ^_^ I guess I just prefer it if no women are mentioned at all (sort of like in Ai no Kusabi ^_-).
I guess that wraps up my little GW yaoi rant. ^^ I guess I just want to say, it doesn't matter if you haven't seen the series. The fanfics are worth it. ^_^ Duo to Heero no eien no ai!! ^_^
